“A mixture of witty narrative, some dreadful puns - all very attractively parcelled... If this book doesn't encourage a new race of young scientists then nothing will.”

Irish Examiner, August 31st 2019

"This book should live on every teacher’s desk, and every school librarian’s so that you can randomly read bits out. It should be in every kitchen for random reading aloud moments, every car for breaking up boring journeys, and every bathroom for those..ermmm…. longer stays…."

Dawn Finch, author and children’s librarian

About Brain-Fizzing Facts:
Why is your elbow called your funny bone? How could you escape the grip of a crocodile's jaw? Which animal can breathe through its bottom? And how do these things all link together? This brilliant book by the science expert Dr Emily Grossman will have eyebrows raised and jaws dropping as it uncovers the amazing scientific explanations behind all sorts of questions that can pop into our heads. Can an egg bounce? How can a giraffe's ridiculously long neck contain the same number of bones as a human's? How much does the Internet weigh?

Written by science superstar and STEM Ambassador Emily Grossman, this book will answer all science questions you may or may not have wondered about. Each section in the book is linked to the one before it, creating a fantastically interactive structure, where a question answered brings up new curiosities and surprises. This is the perfect book for children who love learning about science or who need an extra nudge when it comes to STEM subjects. After all, who wouldn't want to find out how a hippo can use its own sweat as sunscreen?!

  • My third children's book, World-whizzing Facts: Awesome Earth Questions Answered, was published by Bloomsbury Children's Books in June 2021. It contains lots more fun facts and easy-to-understand explanations about climate change and wildlife loss, hopeful stories about our future and tips on what we can all do to help. Buy your copy here.

  • My fourth children's book, Meet The Microbes!: The Tiny Living Things That Mould Our Lives, published by Hachette's Wren & Rook in September 2021, is a beautifully-illustrated picture book for 5-7 year olds about the wonderful world of bacteria, viruses and fungi. Buy your copy here.

Articles and other online content:

  • Content writer and consultant for the new BBC Bitsesize The Regenerators series, an online learning resource to inspire children and teenagers to live a greener life and encourage others to look after the planet.

  • Column for The Totnes Pulse to combat misinformation about Covid-19, the vaccine and Vitamin D, and to answer some common questions about the pandemic.

  • Article for Now Press Play on teaching science and how best to encourage more young people to study science.

I have been interviewed and quoted in many other articles in publications such as The Times, The Guardian, The Sunday Times, The Daily Mail, The Evening Standard and The Sun on science topics, women in STEM, emotions, and science careers - see my press interviews page for more details.

The online misogyny that I experienced on social media, following my Sky News interview on sexism and women in science, is documented in this blog.

As a teenager I wrote articles for The Sunday Express on my experience of a PGL summer camp and an Inter-Railing trip around Europe.
